About the Series
Has anyone ever told you you need a web site? Or you need to have a blog? Join Facebook? Optimize your site? Start an e-mailing list? And when you ask "Why?", you don't get a good answer?
We'd like to change that.
These classes will answer the two most basic questions about technologies in web site development: What is it? And why do I need it? And they will answer it for every technology that you might use on a web site today.
What these classes will do is provide a basic overview and understanding of the technologies in use on the Internet today, how and why they are generally used, and when (or if) you should be integrating them into your web site. These classes aren't so much a "How-To" series, but a "Why-Should-I-Use-This?" series.
We think smaller businesses aren't always well served by the current business model of web site development. We're not saying other companies do bad work - quite the contrary, professional web development agencies do excellent work more often than not. But many micro- or small-businesses can't begin to afford professional agency prices, or understand why they cost as much as they do.
There are plenty of people who will charge less for developing a web site. But not all are reputable, and many use high pressure tactics to convince you you need to have services and technologies for your web site that are neither needed, nor appropriate for the way you run your business. We aim to prepare business owners with the knowledge to keep them from being cheated into a bad web site, or to talk intelligently with your web site developer.
